Cologne is a city located in West Germany. It is the 4th largest city of the country after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. It is also the oldest one, hence it’s important heritage. Located in the heart of the European Metropolis, Cologne has an urban area of more than 2 million people. The city, crossed by the Rhine River, is particularly famous for its cathedral, listed as UNESCO World Heritage, and for the famous Eau de Cologne. As a tourist city, Cologne has a rich cultural heritage and welcomes, each year, several international events.

What to visit in Cologne ?

The Hohenzollern Bridge is a symbol of the city of Cologne. This is a bridge consisting in three iron arches, crossing the river Rhine. It is accessible to both, rail and pedestrian traffic, and offers a wonderful view on the river and the city. It is particularly famous for the tradition inviting couples to attach a love padlock on the guardrail of the bridge. Once the padlock placed, they should throw the key into the Rhine: a symbol of eternal love.

Stay in Cologne

The Cologne Cathedral or Kölner Dom is the 3rd largest gothic cathedral, after those of Seville and Milan. Its construction began in 1248 and lasted more than seven centuries in total. Its 157 meters high make it the tallest cathedral of Germany, but also of the world. Proud and impressive, it is definitely one the symbols of the city of Cologne.

The Farina Fragrance Museum: founded in 1709, this is the oldest perfumery still working nowadays. The museum explains the different production methods of Eau de Cologne since its creation. It includes the presentation of several machines used for the production as well as numerous documents and pictures.

The Imhoff Chocolate Museum shows the entire history of chocolate from its beginning. The exhibition gives an overview of the different products that has been created over time and their production methods. Founded in 1993, it is located on a peninsula on the left side on the Rhine. It is one of the most visited museums in Germany with about 600.000 visitors per year.

The city is also well known for the Cologne Carnival. It is considered as one of the most important parties, after Christmas. The preparation of the carnival starts on the 11th of Novembre at 11.11am but will only end the following year, after a week of celebrations during which concerts, shows, dances and skits will be going well. Between the 11th of november and the week of parades, several events will take place, all on the theme of Cologne and the carnival.
